Questo detto di origine incerta, riflette come al solito l'enorme senso pratico del siciliano che dichiara che "chi fa troppo per i figli e per i nipoti dovrebbe essere picchiato" in quanto fa sacrifici che non verranno mai riconosciuti e apprezzati. Un detto molto amaro che in alcune versioni si trova con la parola "figghie" (figlie femmine) e ovviamente nipoti femmine, ritornando all'antica misoginia sicula nei confronti della donna. Salvo però, alla fine, fare esattamente l'opposto. Infatti il vero "maschio" siciliano è orgoglioso solo se riesce a dare sicurezza economica e beni materiali a figli e nipoti ... e non importa se questi poi gli morderanno la mano!
